De la Promenade à la Compétition en Portugal
Portuguese cycling has always followed the leading cycling countries but has never supported the sport as countries such as Italy and France have done. Competitive cycling in Portugal began since bicycles came to use, in 1878. The sportive spirit was brought by the sons of foreigners who were born in Portugal who had been tainted by the cycling enthusiasm from countries such as France, Germany and England and who naturally belonged to an upper class. As more evolved cycles arrived in the country, Portuguese cycling expanded its realms into recreation, tourism, transport and casual or amusement competition. In 1903, years after bicycles had been introduced in Portugal and only thanks to positive doctor’s opinions, it was made official for the bicycle to be used for commuting. Military, church members and popular –mostly men- masses began to use them and not without a license.
The evolution of female cycling sport in Portugal has been, since its beginning, very restricted due to diverse motives. Compared to other European countries, the lack of support and mediums for cycling sport distinguishes Portugal. Moreover, the country’s rugged topography, especially in main cities, could not be of any help as it inhibits the ordinariness of bicycle use which is so common in countries such as France or Italy. What is more, female cycling sport is still today strongly impregnated with many sexist preconceptions which are manifested in the sport’s management and media.
